Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open tennis tournament in Germany, with a straight-set win over Elise Mertens of Belgium.
The Polish top seed rolled past the 30th-ranked Belgian player 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour and a half in the second round of the women's singles on Thursday, news outlets reported.

In February, Świątek won the Qatar Open in Doha for the third consecutive time.
The 22-year-old Pole in November regained her spot at the top of the world rankings in women's tennis after winning the season-ending WTA Finals tournament in Mexico.
She now leads the WTA rankings with 10,835 points, ahead of Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, with 8,045 points, and American Coco Gauff, with 7,205.
The 2024 Stuttgart Open runs until Sunday.
