Poland to build 1,000 sports halls by 2024: PM

Mateusz Morawiecki made the announcement at a news conference in Raszyn, central Poland, on Wednesday, state news agency PAP reported.

‘A big opportunity for many youngsters’

“These arenas will be built in rural and urban-rural municipalities, especially where there aren’t any proper sports halls yet,” Morawiecki told reporters.

He added the new facilities would represent "a big opportunity for many youngsters who want to look after their own health,” as well as "for those whom we, the parents, want to get off the TV, computers and social media.”

1,000 gyms by end of 2024

“We want to build at least 1,000 such sports halls in the coming years,” Morawiecki vowed. 

“These will be halls for basketball, volleyball, football, but also for tennis, in other words, multi-purpose facilities,” he added.

Morawiecki also stated: “We are going to build dozens of such sports halls already this year, and we plan to complete a further 500 in 2023 and another 500 in 2024.”

“There are wonderful sporting talents in our towns and villages. We have to discover them - this is our task,” he concluded.

Morawiecki was speaking alongside his Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk, who announced that the project would cost some PLN 2 billion (EUR 430 million).
